Update: Kingston Road Sanitary Pump Station

The Public Utilities Engineering Division of the City of Virginia Beach provided the KGCL with an update on the progress of construction at the Kingston Drive pump station. The wet weather has been a challenge to overcome, but construction is moving along very well. The contractor set up the temporary pumping equipment, demolished the old pump station building, and is preparing to remove the old sewage wet well. A large crane has been set up at the work site. This will be used to remove the below-grade concrete wet well and drive the sheet piles to create a cofferdam that will allow construction of the new wet well. Neighbors should expect noise when the steel sheet piles are driven into the ground to create the cofferdam. The project is still scheduled to complete in November.

PLEASE DON’T FEED THE BIRDS IN WITT PARK

gran-torino-clint-eastwood

From time to time we need to send out a reminder that FEEDING WILDLIFE IN WITT PARK IS PROHIBITED.

We don’t mean to be grumps about it. It’s just not good for us or the animals.

Feeding waterfowl increases their permanent population without any checks or balances. Bird feces pollute the lake with excessive nitrates and pose a health risk to people.

You know what isn’t prohibited in Witt Park? FISHING!

PASS IT ON!

Update: Kings Grant Road Sanitary Pump Station Replacement Project

Travelers in and out of Kings Grant along Kings Grant Road will have noted the construction fence and equipment now staged in the Triangle property. The City of Virginia Beach gave the contractor its authorization to proceed with the work earlier this month. During December, the contractor will move utilities at the site of the pump station (which is near the intersection of Kings Grant Road and Sunnybrook Lane). This will be followed by installation of temporary services and demolition of the existing building and driveway. Work in the roadway will also begin in December. The big picture looks like this:

Activity Start End
Pump Station Demolition December 15, 2015 February 16, 2016
Below Grade Construction February 15, 2016 June 16, 2016
Pump Station Construction June 16, 2016 December 16, 2016
Construction of New Sewer Main December 15, 2015 April 16, 2016

(Road Work)

Installation of the new sewer main will begin near the pump station and proceed in phases to its tie in to the HRSD main near Virginia Beach Blvd. Please take care while driving near construction area, and pay attention to the presence of heavy equipment, construction workers and temporary road signs.

Holiday Lights Return

Friends of Kings Grant,
To celebrate the season, the Kings Grant Community League will decorate Witt Park (the duck park along Kings Grant Road) for the holidays. We are asking for your help in the form of your time and/or donations of strings of white outdoor mini-LED lights and outdoor extension cords. Our plan this year is simple, to decorate a few of the crepe myrtle trees that line the park, add a few red bows and some stars. We plan to decorate the park on Saturday, December 5th at 9a.m. and continue on December 6th at 1p.m. If you have a white LED string to donate and hang (many businesses have them on-sale now), or if you just want to help, please come join us. The KGCL will purchase a small number of light strings that residents may purchase from us at our cost on Saturday morning. Children are welcome to assist.

If you are interested in helping in any way please contact us: grounds@kgcl.org

Thanks,

Mary Helen Kline

Group Working to Restore King’s Lake Seeks Help

Restore King's Lake FlyerKGCL Board received email from a leader of a King’s Lake Drive neighborhood group working to address an engineering issue with King’s Lake.

According to Patsy Cameron of King’s Lake Drive a recently constructed dam on the Lynnhaven River has lowered the level of the lake by two feet and as a result vegetation is replacing the lake.

The group is asking residents with interest in the matter to join their efforts to restore the lake height in one or more of the following ways:

  • Attend the City Council meeting Tuesday, October 6 (tomorrow night)
  • Contact your City Council leaders

Picking a New City Manager for Virginia Beach

Sep 10, 2015 01:53 pm | The City of Virginia Beach
For the first time in 24 years, the City Council must choose a new city manager. James K. Spore will retire on Jan. 1, 2016. He began his tenure in Virginia Beach in 1991.

The City Council is conducting a nationwide search for a new city manager. To aid in that search, City Council members want to hear from you. What qualities make a good city manager? What do you want to see in our next leader?

Please take a moment to take this short survey. Your feedback will provide members of City Council with valuable insight to consider when choosing a final candidate. The survey will be available for public input through September 30. To participate, visit Virtual Town Hall
