PLEASE DON’T FEED THE BIRDS IN WITT PARK

gran-torino-clint-eastwood

From time to time we need to send out a reminder that FEEDING WILDLIFE IN WITT PARK IS PROHIBITED.

We don’t mean to be grumps about it. It’s just not good for us or the animals.

Feeding waterfowl increases their permanent population without any checks or balances. Bird feces pollute the lake with excessive nitrates and pose a health risk to people.

You know what isn’t prohibited in Witt Park? FISHING!

PASS IT ON!

Update: Kings Grant Road Sanitary Pump Station Replacement Project

Travelers in and out of Kings Grant along Kings Grant Road will have noted the construction fence and equipment now staged in the Triangle property. The City of Virginia Beach gave the contractor its authorization to proceed with the work earlier this month. During December, the contractor will move utilities at the site of the pump station (which is near the intersection of Kings Grant Road and Sunnybrook Lane). This will be followed by installation of temporary services and demolition of the existing building and driveway. Work in the roadway will also begin in December. The big picture looks like this:

Activity Start End
Pump Station Demolition December 15, 2015 February 16, 2016
Below Grade Construction February 15, 2016 June 16, 2016
Pump Station Construction June 16, 2016 December 16, 2016
Construction of New Sewer Main December 15, 2015 April 16, 2016

(Road Work)

Installation of the new sewer main will begin near the pump station and proceed in phases to its tie in to the HRSD main near Virginia Beach Blvd. Please take care while driving near construction area, and pay attention to the presence of heavy equipment, construction workers and temporary road signs.

City of Virginia Beach Leases the KGCL “Triangle” Property

The City of Virginia Beach and the Kings Grant Community League have signed a one year lease that grants the City use of the “Triangle” property for a storage and equipment laydown area supporting the replacement of the Sanitary Sewer Pump Station on Kings Grant Road.  The scope of the project includes installation of a new sewer line beneath Kings Grant Road from the pump station to Virginia Beach Blvd.  The term of the lease runs from November 1, 2015 through October 31, 2016.  Some construction equipment is already at the Triangle, and residents will soon see increasing activity that includes perimeter fencing and tree protection.  We have good dialogue with the City and their contractor.  As project updates are obtained, more information will be posted to this website.

The KGCL was first contacted about use of this property nearly a year ago.  The KGCL Board’s outreach to our membership through e-mail, newsletters and our general meetings (which included a brief by the City Project Engineer) found a very high level of support for this lease from members.  In addition to providing a suitable location for the contractor’s work, which will keep equipment off the streets during non-work hours, this lease provides the KGCL with a sizable source of revenue that we will reinvest in our properties for the benefit of our community.

King’s Grant Pump Station Update

Planned Construction Start Delayed

The city project to replace the King’s Grant Road sanitary pump station is moving ahead but the planned construction start date of early summer was missed.

Overhead utility lines are being replaced.  New poles and new electric wires were installed to move the lines away from the pump station.  The old electric wires remain. No activity has been seen to move the telephone and cable TV wires.

It was recently determined that trees on private property will conflict with the construction. The contractor, Quality Enterprises of Chesapeake, is working with the city to remedy the conflict.

KGCL is in regular contact with the contractor. They expect construction to begin in several weeks.

City to Lease Triangle

Several times during that past year KGCL members were informed about the contractor’s desire to lease the center portion of the triangle property (in front of the 7-11 and Exxon) as a staging area for construction equipment and materials.

Informal polling of KGCL members by email and discussions at our general meetings found the membership strongly in favor of this plan. A deeper discussion of this topic can be found in our mailed newsletters to members.

Over the past two months, the proposed lease arrangement has changed. The city will lease our property for rather than the contractor.

The change mitigates zoning issues and strengthens assurances that the property will be satisfactorily restored at the completion of work next year.  The draft city lease document contains required protections for KGCL that could not be included in a lease to the contractor.

Further updates will be provided as this project moves forward. Questions and comments should be directed to board@kgcl.org

Help Wanted for Holiday Lights Decoration

Dear Friends of Kings Grant,

In an attempt to bring back some traditions of the past enjoyed by our community, King’s Grant Community League will decorate Witt Park for the holidays. We are asking for your help in the form of your time and/or donations of strings of white outdoor mini lights and extension cords. Our plan this year is simple, to decorate a few of the crepe myrtle trees that line the park, add a few red bows and some stars. We would like to decorate the park on December 6th at 2 p.m. and continue on December 7th at 1p.m.

If you are interested in helping in any way please contact us: grounds@kgcl.org or reply on our Facebook page.

Thanks,
Mary Helen Kline
Grounds Director

KGCL Properties: Preserving Open Space and Access

Did you know that King’s Grant Community League owns three (3) properties? They are:

  1. The Triangle
  2. Witt Park
  3. Lynnhaven River Canoe & Kayak Launch

We own and maintain these properties to preserve open space, provide access to the Lynnhaven River and our lakes, and hold events like the community yard sale.

There’s a new menu item called “Maps” that shows where our properties are located:
