Holiday Lights Return

Friends of Kings Grant,
To celebrate the season, the Kings Grant Community League will decorate Witt Park (the duck park along Kings Grant Road) for the holidays. We are asking for your help in the form of your time and/or donations of strings of white outdoor mini-LED lights and outdoor extension cords. Our plan this year is simple, to decorate a few of the crepe myrtle trees that line the park, add a few red bows and some stars. We plan to decorate the park on Saturday, December 5th at 9a.m. and continue on December 6th at 1p.m. If you have a white LED string to donate and hang (many businesses have them on-sale now), or if you just want to help, please come join us. The KGCL will purchase a small number of light strings that residents may purchase from us at our cost on Saturday morning. Children are welcome to assist.

If you are interested in helping in any way please contact us: grounds@kgcl.org

Thanks,

Mary Helen Kline

City of Virginia Beach Leases the KGCL “Triangle” Property

The City of Virginia Beach and the Kings Grant Community League have signed a one year lease that grants the City use of the “Triangle” property for a storage and equipment laydown area supporting the replacement of the Sanitary Sewer Pump Station on Kings Grant Road.  The scope of the project includes installation of a new sewer line beneath Kings Grant Road from the pump station to Virginia Beach Blvd.  The term of the lease runs from November 1, 2015 through October 31, 2016.  Some construction equipment is already at the Triangle, and residents will soon see increasing activity that includes perimeter fencing and tree protection.  We have good dialogue with the City and their contractor.  As project updates are obtained, more information will be posted to this website.

The KGCL was first contacted about use of this property nearly a year ago.  The KGCL Board’s outreach to our membership through e-mail, newsletters and our general meetings (which included a brief by the City Project Engineer) found a very high level of support for this lease from members.  In addition to providing a suitable location for the contractor’s work, which will keep equipment off the streets during non-work hours, this lease provides the KGCL with a sizable source of revenue that we will reinvest in our properties for the benefit of our community.

Kingston Drive Sanitary Pump Station Project To Start

The City of Virginia Beach awarded the construction work for replacement of the sanitary sewer pump station located at 728 Kingston Drive to Trident Civil of Virginia Beach.  The contract is approved and the contractor is scheduled to start construction on Monday, November 2nd.  Kings Grant residents near the construction site will receive formal notification of the work from the city this week.  At this time the contractor does not foresee the need for an off-site material staging area.

The existing pump station was built in 1968 and is at the end of its useful service life. It also has capacity limits that could lead to possible sanitary sewer overflows.  In addition to replacing the building, the pressurized sewer main from the building to its tie in with another main on Oxford Drive will be relined to extend the life of the pipe without need for replacement.  Besides the building demolition and construction, impact will primarily be to residents along Berkley Place and Berkley Court.  The contractor will generally work between 7am- 4 pm.  Work is expected to take 10-12 months.

Project updates will be posted here as they are received from the city or the contractor.

Group Working to Restore King’s Lake Seeks Help

Restore King's Lake FlyerKGCL Board received email from a leader of a King’s Lake Drive neighborhood group working to address an engineering issue with King’s Lake.

According to Patsy Cameron of King’s Lake Drive a recently constructed dam on the Lynnhaven River has lowered the level of the lake by two feet and as a result vegetation is replacing the lake.

The group is asking residents with interest in the matter to join their efforts to restore the lake height in one or more of the following ways:

  • Attend the City Council meeting Tuesday, October 6 (tomorrow night)
  • Contact your City Council leaders
    • Mayor William D. Sessoms, Jr., 757-385-4581, wsessoms@vbgov.com
    • Councilman James L. Wood, (757) 785-4342, jlwood@VBgov.com
    • City Manager James K. Spore, 757-385-4242, cmoffice@vbgov.com

Picking a New City Manager for Virginia Beach

Sep 10, 2015 01:53 pm | The City of Virginia Beach
For the first time in 24 years, the City Council must choose a new city manager. James K. Spore will retire on Jan. 1, 2016. He began his tenure in Virginia Beach in 1991.

The City Council is conducting a nationwide search for a new city manager. To aid in that search, City Council members want to hear from you. What qualities make a good city manager? What do you want to see in our next leader?

Please take a moment to take this short survey. Your feedback will provide members of City Council with valuable insight to consider when choosing a final candidate. The survey will be available for public input through September 30. To participate, visit Virtual Town Hall

King’s Grant Pump Station Update

Planned Construction Start Delayed

The city project to replace the King’s Grant Road sanitary pump station is moving ahead but the planned construction start date of early summer was missed.

Overhead utility lines are being replaced.  New poles and new electric wires were installed to move the lines away from the pump station.  The old electric wires remain. No activity has been seen to move the telephone and cable TV wires.

It was recently determined that trees on private property will conflict with the construction. The contractor, Quality Enterprises of Chesapeake, is working with the city to remedy the conflict.

KGCL is in regular contact with the contractor. They expect construction to begin in several weeks.

City to Lease Triangle

Several times during that past year KGCL members were informed about the contractor’s desire to lease the center portion of the triangle property (in front of the 7-11 and Exxon) as a staging area for construction equipment and materials.

Informal polling of KGCL members by email and discussions at our general meetings found the membership strongly in favor of this plan. A deeper discussion of this topic can be found in our mailed newsletters to members.

Over the past two months, the proposed lease arrangement has changed. The city will lease our property for rather than the contractor.

The change mitigates zoning issues and strengthens assurances that the property will be satisfactorily restored at the completion of work next year.  The draft city lease document contains required protections for KGCL that could not be included in a lease to the contractor.

Further updates will be provided as this project moves forward. Questions and comments should be directed to board@kgcl.org
