October 15 General Meeting

General Meeting

October 15, 2020 at 7pm

Prince of Peace Lutheran Church

424 Kings Grant Rd

  • All attendees must wear a mask

“The KGCL will conduct its fall membership meeting on Thursday evening October 15, 2020 at 7pm.  Because our normal meeting location at King’s Grant Elementary School remains unavailable, Prince of Peace Lutheran Church at 424 Kings Grant Rd has graciously agreed to allow us to meet there.  Meeting details will be in the KGCL newsletter that will arrive in mailboxes before the meeting date.  As usual, our fall newsletter is sent to all King’s Grant homes, not just those of members.

The KGCL is pleased to announce that our elected representative in Congress will attend this meeting.  Congresswoman Elaine Luria, elected as the Virginia Second Congressional District representative in 2018, will make remarks and take questions during our meeting.  In keeping with our policy of welcoming currently serving elected officials, Luria will talk about issues impacting and or of interest to the Second District.  The KGCL has been working with her staff for well over a year to arrange her attendance, but our meeting calendar is often at odds with the Congressional calendar.  In Congress, she is member of the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.  Among other things, we can expect her remarks to touch on topics that are relevant to our neighborhood’s large contingent of current and former military members.   All King’s Grant residents are welcome (if you are not a member, we will solicit your membership at the meeting), but please – no campaign signs and no campaigning.  This is not a campaign event.

KGCL members attending the meeting will also be asked to review and approve the KGCL 2020-2021 budget.  All attendees must wear a mask.  A small number of masks will be available at the door for any person who forgets to bring one.  Hand sanitizer will be available.”

August Meeting

Our next meeting will be at King’s Grant Baptist Church at 7 p.m. on August 11th (next Tuesday!). It will be held in the Harvest room. Parking is on the side where the farmers market is held and enter through the side door.

At this meeting we will be our annual election. Please, we ask that you wear a mask. We will be practicing physical distancing by providing adequate spacing between seats. Members who are unable to attend are asked to provide the voting proxy that was included in their recent newsletter. A $20 gift card will prize will be given to an attendee as a thank you for their attendance.

4th of July Celebration Cancelled

Independence Day will be a little less festive in King’s Grant this year.  Due to gathering restrictions, we cannot hold our annual parade and the picnic that follows.  The parade requires a permit from the City of Virginia Beach.  The permit application, with the accompanying fee, was due to the city’s Special Events Office 30 days prior.  Because of gathering limits in effect at that time and continuing today, we are not going to be approved for an event on city streets.  Sadly, we have decided to cancel both the parade and the picnic.  Even though the picnic (in our park) is not subject to city permitting, we felt it was prudent to not promote a large assembly in the park when such things are being discouraged in the city.  The parade is also what brings people to the park for our picnic.  As an alternative, the KGCL Board of Directors is contemplating a picnic event at Witt Park on Labor Day (September 7th) so we can gather for some fun, hot dogs, etc.  Hopefully, we will have moved past the current restrictions.  We will see how things develop during the summer.  On the bright side, the reigning bubblegum blowing and watermelon seed spitting champions may wear their crowns awhile longer.

Celebrating HS Graduates of Class 2020

Congratulations to the Senior Class of 2020!  KGCL would like to invite our community to participate in a Car Parade to help celebrate their achievement.  Thank you for choosing to be a part of this memorable time in these young peoples lives. The Car Parade is on Saturday, June 13  at 11 am.  Below you will find information you will need the day of the event.

Information for our family, friends, and neighbors participating in the Drive by celebration.  The parade is on Saturday, June 13 at 11am.  The car parade will start on the intersection of Edinburgh and King’s Grant Road traveling to the intersection of Little Neck Road.  There will be cones and signs to help with traffic flow.  Once the parade begins the cars will queue to form a line, of course allowing others to merge to slowly drive down Kings Grant. We respectfully ask that persons driving vehicles be sure to stay in their cars while driving by.   Do not stop and exit the car for pictures, but feel free to drive by slowly to get a picture.  We also request that the 6 ft social distancing, and masks be used at the park for the safety of our graduates and their families.  Some of these graduates may be immune compromised.   Thank you for choosing to be a part of this memorable time in these young peoples lives.

Free Fishing Weekend (freshwater only)

There is a free fishing weekend (fresh water only) in Virginia on September 28-29.  The Department of Game & Inland Fisheries has scheduled two free fishing days in conjunction with National Hunting and Fishing Day.  Inclement weather during free fishing days in June prompted the department to add additional days.  Anyone can fish free in public fresh waters around the state without having to buy a fishing license.  The KGCL invites you to try your luck from the shoreline at Witt Park on Kings Grant Rd.  More info at: https://www.dgif.virginia.gov/fishing/free-fishing-days/
