Work began today to plant two flower and shrub beds, three non-fruit-producing berry trees, and one live oak.
KGCL President Joe Pilla spoke with the site crew in order to share this information with King’s Grant residents. Mr. Pilla also expressed gratitude to the City for making improvements that will be enduring in our neighborhood for years to come. Finally, he requested that if your friends and neighbors ask you about this work, please direct them to this post rather than to the laborers who are out there trying to get the job done.
Virginia Beach Police to Conduct Neighborhood Surveys
VBPD-NR:2010-165
Release Date: Thursday, November 18, 2010 4:30 p.m.
Starting November 19, 2010, at 6:00 p.m., Chief of Police Jim Cervera and members of his command staff, along with precinct police officers, will begin conducting citizen surveys in selected neighborhoods throughout the city.
The surveys are part of Mayor Will Sessoms’ “Mayor’s Action Challenge for a Safe Neighborhood.” The survey is intended to evaluate the public’s feelings of safety, strengthen connections between the police and those who live in the community, and help the department obtain firsthand information on what is needed to improve safety in their neighborhood.
Mayor Will Sessoms said, “Everyone deserves to live in a safe environment. Through this Mayor’s Action Challenge initiative, we hope to involve members of the community as we develop a plan to increase the number of Virginia Beach families that can enjoy their lives without fear of danger, injury, or damage.”
Chief Cervera stated, “Through the efforts of the Department’s Community Oriented Policing officers, Crime Prevention, and other members of the department, we should be able to interview 500-600 residents throughout the four police precincts.”
In addition to completing the survey, police officers will be providing information pamphlets pertaining to Crime Prevention tips and other information to help citizens become more involved in their community. Police officers will be conducting these surveys from November 19, and it is anticipated the project will be completed by the end of the year.

Mr. Wayne Wilcox shares the City's plans for bikeways and trails at the October General Members' Meeting
At the last General Members’ Meeting on 10/21 we were joined by Mr. Wayne Wilcox, CLA from the City’s Planning, Design and Development team within the Division of Parks and Recreation. Mr. Wilcox shared with members the City’s themes driving the development of a master plan for bikeways and trails. These themes acknowledge that Virginia Beach is not as biking and walking friendly as it could be and they make clear that the City seeks input from residents for improving this situation. Mr. Wilcox invited members to share their thoughts, concerns, and requests for bikeways and trails and many members responded. Among the topic raised were: a need for a bike lane and/or signs on King’s Grant Road, a suggestion to coordinate with the City’s plans to install a sidewalk on North Lynnhaven Road, and desire to have a dedicated multi-use path for bikes and pedestrians from Town Center to the Oceanfront.
The City is currently holding a series of Bikeways and Trails Plan Public Information Meetings. More information, including Mr. Wilcox’s contact information can be found here.
King’s Grant Community League is committed to bringing this kind of information to the attention of the residents and to facilitating communication with the City on the behalf of KGCL Members. To stay informed, be sure to join or renew your membership in KGCL.

You are cordially invited to attend a City Council Candidates Forum on Sept. 16 at 7:00 PM at the Thalia Trinity Presbyterian Church, located across from Thalia Elementary School, sponsored by the Thalia Civic League. The event will be moderated by long time WTKR news anchor, Barbara Ciara.
This year there are 14 candidates running for 6 seats on City Council. Some citizens may not realize that they vote for all of the 6 seats, not just those running for their particular borough. Therefore, it is important that we in the Lynnhaven District know the facts not only about our candidates but all of the others as well.
We look forward to having you as our close neighbors at this forum where you will have the opportunity to hear and interact with those people who will be leading our city for the next four years.
A message from Membership Director, Ward Byington:
King’s Grant Neighbors,
As we are now in hurricane season and Hurricane Earl & Tropical Storm Fiona are possibly steering in our direction (Thursday-Saturday), I would like to take this brief moment to remind you of the importance for advance planning. Our King’s Grant Community League web site provides a list of telephone numbers and Useful Links which are resourceful for quick reference in pre-planning. Click on the highlighted words above to go there now.
Remember, in the event you plan to evacuate the area, communicate your intentions with your neighbors and relatives on your intended travel plans.
We’re still working on the best way to share photos from KGCL events.
If you or family members appear in photos and you do not wish them to be used on our site please send email to Kevin Curry. Positive feedback is also welcome! It will be helpful if you include “KGCL Photos” as the subject of your email.
