There’s a Time for Trash

Sometimes it’s a wonder we don’t forget to put out the trash more often than we do. And who hasn’t felt at the end of the work day like the last thing you want to do is haul the cans back from the curb.

But did you know there’s a specific time to put your trash out and pull the cans in? I didn’t.

It’s written in Section 31-28 (a) of the Code Ordinances of the City of Virginia Beach that your trash:

shall be placed on the curb line of a city right-of-way no earlier than 5:00 p.m. on the day before collection and by 7:00 a.m. on the day of collection. All receptacles must be removed out of view of the public after collection on the day of collection, except as otherwise designated by the city manager or his designee. Containers for recyclables provided to townhouses shall be removed out of view of the public after collection on the day of collection.

The code describes what is considered trash and goes on to state some potential actions the city can take for code violations.

It matters when we put our trash out because it involves the public right of way.  Each of us who drives, delivery and mail trucks drivers, bikers, and pedestrians all count on a clear public right away.  By sticking to the trash schedule we help maintain the right of way. Putting trash out a day early or pulling cans in a day late impedes the right of way.

Next time you put your trash out think about your neighbors and the people who work in your neighborhood who use the street in front of your house.  The simple act of minding the trash schedule can have a positive impact on where we live.

If you have comments or questions regarding Section 31-28 (a) please contact The Department of Housing & Neighborhood Preservation, Code Enforcement Division, Phone (757) 385-4421.  For information, visit their Web page.

City of Virginia Beach Landscape Management Division is installing beds and trees on King's Grant Road near N. Lynnhaven Road

If you are wondering what’s going on near the intersection of King’s Grant Road and N. Lynnhaven Road you’re not alone.

Several residents have stopped by to ask the work crew about what’s happening.

The City of Virginia Beach’s Landscape Management Division is installing flower beds and trees in this median.

Work began today to plant two flower and shrub beds, three non-fruit-producing berry trees, and one live oak.

KGCL President Joe Pilla spoke with the site crew in order to share this information with King’s Grant residents.  Mr. Pilla also expressed gratitude to the City for making improvements that will be enduring in our neighborhood for years to come.  Finally, he requested that if your friends and neighbors ask you about this work, please direct them to this post rather than to the laborers who are out there trying to get the job done.

Virginia Beach Police to Conduct Neighborhood Surveys
VBPD-NR:2010-165

Release Date: Thursday, November 18, 2010 4:30 p.m.
Starting November 19, 2010, at 6:00 p.m., Chief of Police Jim Cervera and members of his command staff, along with precinct police officers, will begin conducting citizen surveys in selected neighborhoods throughout the city.

The surveys are part of Mayor Will Sessoms’ “Mayor’s Action Challenge for a Safe Neighborhood.” The survey is intended to evaluate the public’s feelings of safety, strengthen connections between the police and those who live in the community, and help the department obtain firsthand information on what is needed to improve safety in their neighborhood.

Mayor Will Sessoms said, “Everyone deserves to live in a safe environment. Through this Mayor’s Action Challenge initiative, we hope to involve members of the community as we develop a plan to increase the number of Virginia Beach families that can enjoy their lives without fear of danger, injury, or damage.”

Chief Cervera stated, “Through the efforts of the Department’s Community Oriented Policing officers, Crime Prevention, and other members of the department, we should be able to interview 500-600 residents throughout the four police precincts.”
In addition to completing the survey, police officers will be providing information pamphlets pertaining to Crime Prevention tips and other information to help citizens become more involved in their community. Police officers will be conducting these surveys from November 19, and it is anticipated the project will be completed by the end of the year.

City Shares Bikeways and Trails Plans With, Seeks Input From KGCL

Mr. Wayne Wilcox shares the City's plans for bikeways and trails

Mr. Wayne Wilcox shares the City's plans for bikeways and trails at the October General Members' Meeting

At the last General Members’ Meeting on 10/21 we were joined by Mr. Wayne Wilcox, CLA from the City’s Planning, Design and Development team within the Division of Parks and Recreation.  Mr. Wilcox shared with members the City’s themes driving the development of a master plan for bikeways and trails.  These themes acknowledge that Virginia Beach is not as biking and walking friendly as it could be and they make clear that the City seeks input from residents for improving this situation.  Mr. Wilcox invited members to share their thoughts, concerns, and requests for bikeways and trails and many members responded. Among the topic raised were: a need for a bike lane and/or signs on King’s Grant Road, a suggestion to coordinate with the City’s plans to install a sidewalk on North Lynnhaven Road, and desire to have a dedicated multi-use path for bikes and pedestrians from Town Center to the Oceanfront.

The City is currently holding a series of Bikeways and Trails Plan Public Information Meetings.  More information, including Mr. Wilcox’s contact information can be found here.

King’s Grant Community League is committed to bringing this kind of information to the attention of the residents and to facilitating communication with the City on the behalf of KGCL Members.  To stay informed, be sure to join or renew your membership in KGCL.
