There is a meeting of the General Members on Wednesday, January 25 at 7:30 P.M. This is a change from our traditional Thursday meetings. Our meeting place is no longer available on Thursdays. The meeting will be held at Little Neck Swim and Racquet Club.
We will conduct normal business, with reports from officers and directors, new business, unfinished business and announcement. President Joe Pilla will present the following items for discussion:
Lawn services selection
Budget increase for Lawn Services
Lynnhaven Boys Baseball/Trant Field
There will be a chance to win a free car detailing from King’s Grant Citgo. Members must be present to win.
We need a lawn service to cut the Triangle and trim our other properties, Witt Park and the Lynnhaven River access on Watergate lane. Edging and occasional removal of light debris is also needed. To address these needs we are publishing this informal request for bids from local companies. All bidders are welcome, but preference is for a company with ties to King’s Grant. We request a yearly maintenance plan and cost. Lowest cost is a significant factor. Bidders must provide proof of insurance.
Basic requirements are:
One (1) mowing every ten (10) days from April through October
Mowing as needed from November through March
Edging on curbs
Debris removal as needed
To respond, send a proposal to board@kgcl.org. Bidders may be invited to give a presentation at a Board of Directors meeting. KGCL will consider advertisement in exchange for discounted rates. Advertisement may include one or more of: placement in our newsletter, on our Web site, or a small, street visible sign reading “Lawn Care Provided By: [YOUR COMPANY]” at one or more locations.
Members are encouraged to share this post with any lawn service providers they know.
Councilman Jim Wood speaks with Members at the October General Meeting
A meeting of the General Members was held on Thursday, October 20 at Little Neck Swim and Racquet Club. The meeting was well attended. The meeting began with a Member meet & greet. Light refreshments of cookies, pastry, and coffee were served. Councilman Jim Wood, Lynnhaven District was the invited guest. Councilman Wood addressed members briefly and took questions. Questions were about light rail, the city’s budget, and strategic growth areas. President Joe Pilla presented KGCL’s 2011-2012 budget and it was approved by members. Treasurer Lev Huntington presented the results of our self-audit and the current financials. Other reported items included zoning activities in King’s Grant, the status of Articles of Incorporation and Bylaws, and the status of lawn services for our public spaces. Minutes were recorded by Sally Huntington, Secretary. Minutes will be posted to the Meetings page. The next Meeting of General Members will be in January 2012.
The meeting will begin with a meet-and-greet of neighbors. Refreshments will be served. The agenda for the meeting includes a status update on the sidewalk planned for N. Lynnhaven Road and a bike lane under consideration for King’s Grant Road. Other zoning activities will be reported.
An update and timeline will be provided for the 2011-2012 budget.
Councilman Jim Wood will attend the meeting. This is a great opportunity to have a conversation with our representative for the Lynnhaven District.
A new Board of Officers and Directors was elected. Follow this link to the list of Officers and Directors: https://kgcl.org/board/
Updating and publishing the Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws has been an ongoing activity. The Articles were established on September 28, 1962 and have remained unchanged (scans: page 1, page 2, page 3). The By-Laws were most recently ratified in 2002. A committee was established to update and publish the Articles of Incorporation and the By-Laws.

If you drove past The Triangle between the hours of 9AM and 12 PM on Saturday you probably saw the trash piling up. Perhaps you saw adults and kids walking around the neighborhood with big, orange trash bags in tow. That activity was part of Clean the Bay Day and those were volunteers from the King’s Grant Zone.

Clean the Bay Day is an annual event that dates back to 2008 in King’s Grant and 1988 in Virginia Beach. Clean the Bay Day occurs every first Saturday in June. The purpose of the event is to remove debris from the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed and to raise awareness about pollutants found in the water. Prior to its affiliation with Clean the Bay Day, The King’s Grant Zone was established as a King’s Grant community cleanup to remove debris from our storm water system and adjacent parts of the the Lynnhaven River. Volunteers come from throughout the community of King’s Grant. Many participants come from neighborhood and nearby schools; Kingston, Malibu, Kemp’s Landing, King’s Grant, Lynnhaven and First Colonial. Others come from neighborhood churches and businesses that operate in King’s Grant.
A lawnmower, gas cans and a car battery were among the items found
In 2011, 45 King’s Grant Zone volunteers collected roughly 1,090 pounds of trash from approximately 3.5 miles of land. Forty-four bags were filled along with hundreds of pounds of bulk items. The most commonly found items were plastic drink bottles and aluminum cans. Other items included a lawnmower, a billboard, empty paint cans, lumber, PVC pipe, car tires and a car battery. One car battery, alone, contains 18 pounds of lead and 5 pounds of sulfuric acid.

Saturday, May 7th, King’s Grant Community League held is first ever (or least as long as anyone can remember) community yard sale. The event was put on by the KGCL Board of Directors through an ad hoc committee organized by Lev Huntington, Treasurer. By all accounts the yard sale was well received by the community and a big success all around. The event ran from 8 AM until 2 PM. All 38 spaces reserved for the event were used, with the majority taken by league members to sell and trade household goods. Some sellers brought plants and flowers. Others brought hand made items. Face painting was popular with the kids at $1 each. Concessions were also served all day. Camaraderie among everyone was apparent.
The KGCL Board of Directors would like to thank Prince of Peace Church for sharing their parking lot. Thanks also go to King’s Grant 7-11 and King’s Grant Citgo for their neighborly cooperation. There was certainly an abundance of activity at The Triangle. Our hope is that community events held in our open spaces will demonstrate that King’s Grant is a vibrant, healthy community and will create opportunities for the residents of King’s Grant and surrounding neighborhoods to come together in good spirit.
We’re always interested in what you have to say. Share your feedback about the yard sale. Did you like it? Not like it? Was it good for the community? What would you like to see at a future KGCL yard sale? Are you interested in joining the organizing committee? Please write to us at info@kgcl.org.
