KGCL Announces the Program for its Fall General Meeting
The KGCL fall newsletters were delivered to all homes in King’s Grant this week. Please note the date of our fall general meeting is October 4th. It is early this year to avoid schedule conflicts. The meeting will be at King’s Grant Elementary School on N. Lynnhaven Rd beginning at 7pm.
For this meeting, the KGCL will welcome back a trio of real estate professionals who provided a wonderful presentation at one of our meetings several years ago. It was among our best attended presentations. Catherine Prutsman, Nancy Sorg, and Holly Fisher are Realtors with Rose and Womble and partners in Virginia Coastal Connection. They will speak to market trends with emphasis on what is happening to home values and sales in King’s Grant. This is a perfect opportunity to find out what is driving the market and how you can be a part of it. This is a no-sales pitch event. Our guests will award three local restaurant gift certificates to attendees at the end of their presentation. As the meeting winds down, they will be available to answer questions that attendees may want to save for one-on-one. Don’t miss it.
Our meeting will also provide members with the latest information on the carp introduction project and time to ask questions about that effort. We will also present and ask for approval of our annual budget. On top of all this, the KGCL will have a drawing for a $20 Wawa gift card. Register at the door as you arrive, and we will draw the winner’s name from a basket at the end of the meeting. We hope to see you there!
Solution to the Word Search Puzzle Found in the Fall 2018 KGCL Newsletter
There are 68 street names in the puzzle. The editor acknowledges one error that was not found until after our newsletter went to the printer. The solution for PRINCE CHARLES shows in the puzzle as “PRINCE CHARLOE”. Sorry about that. If you also found WITT PARK, good job!

4th of July Parade
The King’s Grant Community League is hosting its annual Independence Day parade and picnic on Wednesday, July 4th. Everyone is welcome to participate in whatever fashion they can – ride or walk. The highlight is the children’s bicycle decorating contest. More details on that are below. Following our 1 ¼ mile parade route around Lake Forest, we will gather at Witt Park to ceremoniously raise the American Flag, recognize the winners of our bicycle contest, have a few more children’s games, listen to some inspiring patriotic music, and enjoy some picnic food. Marco’s Pizza is donating some pizzas (they went fast last year with so many hungry kids), and the KGCL will be grilling hotdogs and serving watermelon.
Participants should gather in Blue Ridge Ct by 10:45am so we can step out at 11:00am. We’ll be led by the firetruck from Station 20 of the VB Fire Department. This year, we will judge the bicycles before the parade at a judging stand in Blue Ridge Ct. Be sure to stop by with your decorated bike before the parade and give us your name and age. We will have prizes in three categories: 7 years and under, 8-12 years, and 13 years and older. Winners will be announced at the park following the parade.
We welcome any means of transportation that can get around the parade route. In past years, we’ve had vintage cars and trucks, 4-wheel drive vehicles, golf carts, lawn tractors, farm tractors, motorcycles, bicycles, tricycles, and wagons.
This is a great way to start your Independence Day celebration, so come join us. Our parade flyer is attached.
City Releases Final Plan for Refurbishment of Groveland Park
Groveland Park is the city playground park near the intersection of Kings Grant Rd and N. Lynnhaven Rd. It is the nearest children’s playground for many King’s Grant homes. The final plan for site refurbishment and new playground equipment is now available. The equipment has been ordered and construction will be scheduled after the 4th of July holiday. In addition to lots of cool play stuff for kids, there will be several new benches and some aesthetic improvements.
Carp Delivery
The carp delivery will be today, Thursday, June 14th. The delivery truck is expected to arrive about 2PM. We expect the process to begin on Edinburgh Drive where the road crosses the lake just east of Kings Grant Road. Once the work at Lake Forest is complete, the truck will head down to the Kingston area to handle those three lakes. We welcome anyone who wants to observe. Pictures will be taken and posted.
Kings Grant Lake Carp Project Update
The project to reintroduce the state-approved species of grass carp into King’s Grant lakes is ready for the next big step. The delivery of the sterile, grass munching carp is expected on Thursday, June 12th! The fish are being transported a considerable distance by truck to our neighborhood, so the day could potentially change. Updates will be provided on this site as the day and times are confirmed. The neighborhood organizers of this project have a permit from the Virginia Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) to place carp in four of the five KG lakes. These are Lake Forest (the large lake roughly bounded by Watergate Ln and Edinburgh Dr), Kings Lake, Queens Lake, and the unnamed pond between Queen Elizabeth Dr and Prince Charles Dr. The group is still working with the state on the permitting process for Timber Lake, the other large lake that is roughly bounded by Quimby Rd, Winchester Ln, Kensington St, and the Lynnhaven baseball fields, so this lake will not be part of this delivery. The project organizers understand that many donors to this project want to see the delivery, so stay tuned. The fish can be delivered directly from the truck into some lakes, but others will be stocked by carrying the fish to the water. More details will be provided as soon as we get them.
Carp Project Update
This is an update on the water quality project that reintroduces grass carp to the lakes of King’s Grant. This is an initiative to control the growing problem with aquatic weeds in the lakes. The background on this project, the species of fish, and the fund raising to accomplish this has been the subject of earlier postings. Details may be found in earlier postings on this KGCL website.
Fund raising exceeded our $5,500 goal. We received approximately $6,500 in donations that is being maintained in a separately managed bank account. To all the neighbors who donated to this project – living on or away from the water – thank you. The additional funds in the account will be retained for periodic replenishment of the carp that is necessary because of normal, expected mortality.
Members of the community leading the project met with a representative from the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (DGIF) two weeks ago to examine the condition of the lakes. They have also been engaged with the Richmond office. On May 22nd, the organizer received a permit for four of the five lakes in the community. The permit authorizes introduction of the sterile grass carp into Lake Forest (which includes the small portions connected to it by culverts running under the roads), Kings Lake, Queens Lake and the small unnamed lake between Queen Elizabeth Dr and Prince Charles Dr. Lake Forest is the body of water encircled by Edinburgh Dr, Kings Grant Rd, and Watergate Ln. Unfortunately, approval for Timber Lake, the other large lake that is roughly bounded by Quimby Rd, Winchester Ln, Kensington St, and the Lynnhaven baseball fields was withheld. The organizers are working on that since it is the lake that is most congested by weeds. More details will be provided as soon as we get them.
The fish will be coming from a state-approved supplier in Deltaville VA (ByBrook Hatchery). A copy of the permit was also sent to the hatchery to validate our purchase requirement. We are in the process of ordering the carp and will provide the community a delivery date as soon as we have that information. The DGIF representative advised the community representatives that the carp will consume the vegetation below the water, but stems and leaves above the water may persist unless removed by raking or other collection methods. We will have to wait to see how things proceed. Signs, with a picture of the fish, will be posted at common fishing spots on the lakes to discourage removal by fisherman.
