King’s Grant Community League hosts Councilman and Vice Mayor Jim Wood

The King’s Grant Community League (KGCL) will hold its spring meeting at 7 pm on Thursday, May 16 at King’s Grant Elementary School.  Mr. Jim Wood, a resident of Kings Grant and our current Vice Mayor, will attend to update community residents on the major initiatives and issues in the city.  As in the past, Mr. Wood will respond to questions and listen to citizen concerns.  Community League members and neighborhood residents who want to join your Community League are encouraged to attend.  We are fortunate to be able to provide this face-to-face opportunity to engage directly with city leadership, so don’t miss it.

We will also be holding our annual election at this meeting and that requires a quorum of members, either present or by proxy.  The spring KGCL newsletter was delivered to members last week and it contains a proxy for completion by members who will not be present.  Please return the proxy if you cannot be present.  Instructions for returning it my email are in the newsletter.

HRSD construction project

The Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) has announced the start of a multi-phase construction project that will impact traffic for King’s Grant residents who use N. Some of the details were discussed at our KGCL meeting on February 21.  Following is an excerpt from the HRSD communication to the KGCL:

Project

Sanitary Sewer System Improvements: Virginia Beach Boulevard Pipeline and Pinetree Pumping Station

Overview

HRSD, your regional wastewater treatment utility, is undertaking a multiphase project to decommission its Chesapeake-Elizabeth Treatment Plant (CETP), built in 1965, located at 5332 Shore Drive, in the City of Virginia Beach. An extensive study determined it was more advantageous to upgrade parts of the sanitary sewer system throughout the city rather than upgrade existing treatment plant process systems to meet the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality requirement to reduce treated discharges to the Chesapeake Bay. The treatment plant closure and corresponding sanitary sewer system upgrades will not only address regulatory requirements, but will also improve the overall operation and reliability of the sewer system. To accomplish this decommissioning, HRSD will redirect sewage flows previously being sent to and treated at the CETP to other existing HRSD treatment plants in the area.

As part of this larger initiative, several smaller sewer system improvement projects have been or will be implemented. Two of these projects located along a portion of Virginia Beach Boulevard and within the Pinetree neighborhood are detailed below:

The Virginia Beach Boulevard Sanitary Sewer Pipeline Improvement project will replace the existing 24-inch sewer pipeline with a larger 42-inch pipeline to reliably convey the increased sewer flow along Virginia Beach Boulevard from North Lynnhaven Road to Great Neck Road.

The Pinetree Pumping Station Improvement project, located at 2924 Virginia Beach Boulevard, will update the internal equipment and reconfigure the external piping for the station. These improvements are needed to handle the increased flows along this corridor and improve station reliability.

In coordination with the City of Virginia Beach and in an effort to minimize multiple disruptions to the public, HRSD will construct the smaller City sewer pipelines to connect City pump stations to the new HRSD pipeline.

The following roads will be impacted at some point throughout construction:

– Portions of Virginia Beach Boulevard and intersections from North Lynnhaven Road to Great Neck Road.

– Eureka Avenue

– Parker Lane

Staging:              Actual Month to start     April 2019

Construction:    By seasons                        Spring 2019 thru December 2021

Restoration:      Immediately following construction

The Virginia Beach Boulevard pipeline will not begin until Fall 2019.

King’s Grant Community Yard Sale

Spring is almost here and we’re preparing for our 7th annual King’s Grant Community Yard Saleat The Triangle in front of 7-Eleven.  It will be held on Saturday, May 4th, from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.  The rain date will be May 11th.

We will again provide 12’x12’ spaces for a charge of $5.00 for Community League members and $15.00 for nonmembers.  You can bring your own tables or rent 8ft. tables from us for a fee of $10.00 each.  We’ll also provide a food booth and portable restroom for your convenience.  A donation truck will come at the end of the sale to pick up any unsold items that you don’t want to take home.

We ask that you only sell items that would be sold at a yard or garage sale.  We are not licensed to sell things that are made or bought for resale as part of a business or craft sale.

VB Mounted Police this Saturday

The King’s Grant Community League invited the Virginia Beach Police Mounted Patrol, an element of the Special Operations Division, to bring their patrol to King’s Grant on Saturday, March 16^th.  The police officers and their horses will arrive at Kingston Elementary School around noontime and from there will make an unscripted ride through our neighborhood streets.  The officers encourage interaction so bring your children to meet them at Kingston or watch for them as they ride along various streets.
