4th of July Parade

The King’s Grant Community League is hosting its annual Independence Day parade and picnic on Wednesday, July 4th.  Everyone is welcome to participate in whatever fashion they can – ride or walk.  The highlight is the children’s bicycle decorating contest.  More details on that are below.  Following our 1 ¼ mile parade route around Lake Forest, we will gather at Witt Park to ceremoniously raise the American Flag, recognize the winners of our bicycle contest, have a few more children’s games, listen to some inspiring patriotic music, and enjoy some picnic food.  Marco’s Pizza is donating some pizzas (they went fast last year with so many hungry kids), and the KGCL will be grilling hotdogs and serving watermelon.

Participants should gather in Blue Ridge Ct by 10:45am so we can step out at 11:00am.  We’ll be led by the firetruck from Station 20 of the VB Fire Department.  This year, we will judge the bicycles before the parade at a judging stand in Blue Ridge Ct.  Be sure to stop by with your decorated bike before the parade and give us your name and age.  We will have prizes in three categories:  7 years and under,  8-12 years, and 13 years and older.  Winners will be announced at the park following the parade.

We welcome any means of transportation that can get around the parade route.  In past years, we’ve had vintage cars and trucks, 4-wheel drive vehicles, golf carts, lawn tractors, farm tractors, motorcycles, bicycles, tricycles, and wagons.

This is a great way to start your Independence Day celebration, so come join us.  Our parade flyer is attached.

Carp Delivery

The carp delivery will be today, Thursday, June 14th. The delivery truck is expected to arrive about 2PM. We expect the process to begin on Edinburgh Drive where the road crosses the lake just east of Kings Grant Road. Once the work at Lake Forest is complete, the truck will head down to the Kingston area to handle those three lakes. We welcome anyone who wants to observe. Pictures will be taken and posted.

Director Vacancy (Help Wanted)

After 14 years in the neighborhood and nearly 10 with King’s Grant Community League our technology director, Kevin Curry, is moving to Shore Drive. That means we need a new technology director.

Responsibilities are light, and include:

  • Maintaining a Word Press web site and domain name for kgcl.org
  • Posting to our web site, Facebook, and Next Door as needed and desired

It is an easy job and a great fit for anyone with web and social media skills who loves our neighborhood. Kevin will be happy to train and assist until you are comfortable.

If interested, please email board@kgcl.org

King’s Grant Community Yard Sale

Spring is here and the King’s Grant Community League is preparing for its 7th annual yard sale at The Triangle in front of 7-Eleven. It will be held on Saturday, May 5th, from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The rain date will be May 12th.

We will again provide 12’x12’ spaces for a charge of $5.00 for Community League members and $15.00 for nonmembers. You can bring your own tables or rent 8ft. tables from us for a fee of $10.00 each. We’ll also provide a food booth and portable restroom for your convenience.

We ask that you only sell unwanted items that would be sold at a yard or garage sale. We are not licensed to sell things that are made or bought for resale as part of a business.
For more information and to reserve a space and/or tables, please contact Sally Huntington at 404-3503 or by e-mail at kgclyardsale@gmail.com.

We hope you’ll join us this year at our KGCL event as a vendor or visitor to make this our best sale ever.

Topic: Reintroducing Carp to Our Lakes

In the KGCL newsletter recently delivered to all homes in King’s Grant, we wrote about the possible reintroduction of carp in our fresh water lakes as a means to control the expanding problem of aquatic weeds. We will devote our fall meeting to this discussion. Based on the size of our lake system, we estimate that approximately 300 carp would be needed to start, with about 20% replenishment every two years if the program meets expectations.  As a property owner on the lake, the KGCL has a special interest in the water quality of our lakes, and we will engage our membership to determine the extent of our participation, but it remains primarily a task for home owners around the lakes to lead the way.  If you have an interest in the appearance and water quality in our neighborhood lakes, please attend.  Read your newsletter for more information.

New Landscaping at The Triangle

As you are driving by The Triangle you will notice that we replaced the landscaping at the intersection of King’s Grant Road and N. Lynnhaven Road.

May Farm Garden Club donated the landscaping as a community project. Elaine Hillers was the point person for the garden club and did all the coordination with the nursery for design and plant selection. Plants were selected as low maintenance and drought resistant.

KGCL will maintain the landscaping, as we have always done. Basically, we will mulch it (Elaine suggested pine straw for the future), spray it, weed it.

Wolfsnare Creek Park

King’s Grant Community League’s mission is to maintain open space in the neighborhood for residents and visitors. This park is a tranquil spot on Watergate Lane looking north over Wolfsnare Creek. There’s a sturdy bench where you can sit to look, listen, and think. There’s an access to the water suitable for canoes and kayaks at high tide. Boat trailers and motor boats are not allowed.

Independence Day Parade and Picnic

King’s Grant Community League will host its annual Independence Day parade and picnic beginning at 11am on Tuesday, July 4th.  The event is easy to enjoy… just show up and have fun.

KGCL really wants your participation in whatever transportation mode suits your interest:  bikes, strollers, golf carts, wagons, lawn mowers, vintage vehicles, decorated vehicles, tractors, fire trucks, motorcycles, or just walk.  Tell your neighbors.  Assemble in Blue Ridge Court across from Witt Park at 10:45am.

KGCL will give each child 12 years old or younger a large patriotic pinwheel for participating.  We will also award prizes in our bicycle decorating contest.
